That’s what two London high school graduates who are part of the LGBTQ2+ community are calling for.Sal Hill and Mason Robichaud are this year’s recipients of the Rainbow Youth Leadership Bursary, sponsored by the London Community Foundation and the Pride London Festival. The bursary recognizes local high school graduates for their contributions to the LGBTQ2+ community, specifically those that support tolerance and acceptance of London area LGBTQ2+ people and their allies.”They’re really showing leadership, but at the same time they’re maintaining their grades, doing well in school, and sometimes they’ve had to overcome personal challenges,”said Lori Runciman, director of grants at the London Community Foundation.Robichaud, 18, came out to his family as gay when he was 14. He grew up in a family that struggled with finances and moved often, which made keeping friendships difficult. When he was 16, he moved into housing provided by WAYS Mental Health in London where he pays rent, purchases his own food and other needs, and contributes to the home.Luckily, Robichaud said, his friends and family were supportive of him when he came out.He said he thought it was important that he took on an activist and educator role after ]so many activists helped him when he was struggling with his identity.”A year before I was ready to come out, I felt rather alone and unsure who I was and how I could make that work for me,” Robichaud said.
